Small, compact cars are really making a comeback in America, and we’ve driven quite a few here, including the new Ford Fiesta. The all new Mazda 2 is based on the same platform as the Fiesta, so you’d assume they are pretty similar cars. While they’re similar in size, that might just be where the similarities stop. We’ve had the opportunity to drive a few different models of the Fiesta and on every occasion we’ve come back with the same opinions. It’s a great car for the money. Lots of fun to drive on tight, twisty roads and economical. So what did we think about the Mazda 2?

Mazda obviously has roots in racing and they have been branding their portfolio to remind you of that fact. So the first area where the Mazda differs from the Ford is in the weight of the car. Mazda knows lighter is better. The Mazda 2 is only a few hundred pounds heavier than the Lotus Elise, one of the best handling and fun cars you can buy. It’s also a few hundred pounds lighter than it’s cousin, the Ford Fiesta. Continue reading

2011 Mazda 6 i Touring Plus

Mazda 6 i Touring Plus by txGarage

On the heels of reviewing the 2011 Mazda 6, comes news reports that the family sedan might be tossed out of Mazda’s line up. Dismal sales are to blame, and seeing that Mazda predicted 100,000 units sold in 2010 and only meeting half that, we can’t blame them for considering the move. We can’t blame the consumer either. The Mazda 6 is a great car, as we’ll get into in just a moment, but there is an enormous amount of competition in this segment. The problem is that if Mazda pulls the 6, they won’t have anything competing in the mid-sized sedan segment in America. That’s not a good prospect either. Continue reading

Review: 2010 Toyota Prius

2010 Toyota Prius

2010 Toyota Prius

This week on txGarage we are testing the all new 2010 Toyota Prius. In all honesty, I’ll have to say none of us were too thrilled about driving the Prius for the week, Hybrid cars just are not our style. Let’s start out with our preconceived notions about the Prius itself. Although I have never driven the 1st gen or 2nd gen Prius, I’ve always heard the same; they are slow, they are heavy and handle horribly, and they cost too much to make up the benefit of the gas savings. Not to mention that it’s not much of a looker. So, why buy a Prius then? Continue reading

The Camaro is Back

Sunoco Camaro

Sunoco Camaro

It has been a long time since we have seen a real race series pitting iconic American muscle cars against each other. The Camaro vs Mustang in American racing is what helped spark the muscle car revaluation in the late 60′s. Seeing the classic dark blue Sunoco Chevy Camaro back to fight agains the Mustang in the Grand-Am KONI challenge brings us back to those iconic times.
We will get a chance to see these cars go head to head during the final round of the 2009 KONI Race at Virginia International Raceway. We don’t expect the Camaro to have a spectacular showing against the seasoned Mustangs but it should still be a blast to watch. If you tune in you will also get the pleasure of watching them battle with the new M3′s, Porsche’s, GTI’s, Miata’s, and a Subaru Legacy. It is a great and exciting racing series.

My Top 10 Cars at Frankfurt:

Frankfurt Germany

Frankfurt Germany

The International Motor Show or (IAA) is the world’s largest motor show and is held in Frankfurt Germany. The very first show was in 1897 in a small hotel in Berlin. Since then the show has grown with attendance almost reaching the one million mark. All the big and small manufacturers of the world bring their best and most advanced technology and design to Frankfurt to show to the automotive world.

I know this is a Texas car blog and Frankfurt is a long ways away from Texas and many of the cars displayed there will never see our shoreline. But bear with me as I go through my top picks from the Frankfurt Motor Show.  This is an enthusiast site, so I hope you enjoy the cars as much as I do.
