I wasn’t alive in the 60’s and 70’s, a time that most call the golden era of American motorsports. I never had the opportunity to watch the original Boss 302 race in the Trans-Am series and win, yet it’s a car I’ve heard of many times as this American classic certainly has a reputation that precedes it..

It’s been a long time since the Boss 302 rose to glory, and the Mustang has gone through many changes. When I first heard that Ford was considering bringing the Boss back, I was actually worried. Would it just be another dressed up Mustang with a graphics package and fancy wheels? The only real track worthy Mustang to date has been those branded with a Roush badge, so would this be more of the same?

Ford’s VP of global marketing, Jim Farley, made a pretty bold statement that made me hope for the best. He said “My dream for the car was that it would make a lot of money for a guy street racing. It should be a car that winds up on YouTube doing something illegal. I’ve been waiting 20-plus years to launch a car like this.” Now you see why this statement gave me hope!

Not a nostalgic machine:

On the outside, the Boss is basically a 2012 Mustang. The front grill sports the Mustang pony badge with red, white, and blue stripes behind it. It has a more aggressive and race-inspired front splitter. The graphics are all nostalgia with the iconic C-stripe on each side and black on the hood come straight from the ’69 Boss 302.

We all really liked the overall styling of the Boss. It wasn’t overdone; it’s pretty straight forward and race inspired. We couldn’t agree though on the best color scheme. The Boss only comes in five colors including the Performance White, Race Red, Competition Orange, Kona Blue Metallic, and Yellow Blaze Metallic. I really like the White/Black car we were reviewing while Toby thought the Orange/Black was a better fit. Actually I like pretty much every color scheme I’ve seen on the Boss.

Inside The Beast:

There isn’t much as far as options in the Boss, and that’s a good thing. You can’t get a sat-nav with SYNC and you can’t get heated/electric/leather seats. The option that is available, and you’ll want to get, are the Recoro seats. These are heavily bolstered, but incredibly comfortable!

The rest of the interior is your basic Mustang, which isn’t as bad as it used to be. A few track-themed items are scattered around you including an Alcantara steering-wheel, a retro cue-ball shifter, black gauges with a tach that stretches to 9,000 rpm, and some “Powered by Ford” door plates.

It’s a basic, business only interior and we loved it!

Powering the Boss:

The Boss 302 carries around the 5.0 liter engine like the current GT Mustang. For those of you hearing nostalgic numbers, that’s 302 cubic inches. It’s the same engine, yet it’s been tweaked and reworked to push out 32 more horses. This was done with an all new intake manifold with runners resembling velocity stacks, new cylinder heads with stronger alloy, camshafts increased lift, the intake valves grew larger, and the bearings are replaced with race-spec bearings. All this jargon equates to 444 horsepower at 7500 rpm. Yes, that’s 7500 rpm on a Mustang.

Revving the Boss up to 7500 takes a little getting used to. If you are familiar with driving Mustangs, you don’t expect to keep your foot on the throttle that long, but it keeps going. This car doesn’t just push you back in the seat, it rockets you seamlessly to where you need to be. With over a 100 hp disadvantage to the GT500, the Boss is only 0.2 seconds slower 0-60.
The horsepower numbers aren’t the big kicker with the Boss, though. It goes without saying that a 32 hp gain isn’t that substantial, but there’s so much more to this engine and car than peak horsepower.

On the track and on the street:

No matter if you’re on the track or on the street, when you hit a corner, it’s time for this Mustang to shine. One of the first things I noticed when I got behind the wheel of the Boss is how different the steering felt compared to other Mustangs. It was lighter, but not in a bad way. It felt very direct, but made the car feel lighter on it’s feet and much more nimble. The chassis feels overwhelmingly balanced as you don’t get the feeling of a heavy front end like you do in the GT500. This, in turn, inspires confidence in the turns.

To step up the Boss’ suspension, Ford gave it stiffer springs, a fatter stabilizer bar, 5 way adjustable shocks, and new bushings. You ride on top of 19-inch Pirelli P Zero tires which are 9.5-inches wide in the rear. The tires alone give you so much grip that it inspires you even more so.

Getting ready to stop this bad boy are some 4-piston Brembo brakes resting on 14-inch rotors, vented for better cooling. The pads tucked in these Brembos are close to race-spec compound, but give minimal squeal.

Everything about this car came to life once we got it out on the track at Texas Motorsport Ranch. The track is full of elevation changes and tight cornering. The Boss just took it all in and spit it all out. I’ve been out on a few tracks in a few different cars, but this track and this car were definitely the peak of my track driving experience.

Yes, how much:

The price of the Boss isn’t that outrageous. In terms of power and performance, on paper, the Boss falls nicely in between the Mustang GT and the GT500. The price is no different. You can get a base Boss 302 tor $40,995; throw in the Racaro seats and Torsen limited-slip differential and only add another $1,995 to that price. If you are worried about fuel cost, it is a high-performance track-ready car, well don’t be. We easily averaged in the mid 20 mpg range throughout our week of everyday driving. For a weekend racer as competent on the track as the Boss is, that’s quite a bargain. Ford will be producing only 3250 Boss 302s and 750 Laguna Seca editions totalling out at 4000 total examples.

We had this car out at Texas Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Texas for almost the entire day. The day before they actually delivered a Boss 302 Laguna Seca S to a customer from Houston to this very track. Ford brought the car to the MSR track and had the Ford engineering team tune it and fit it to the driver. While we were there in our review car, we not only received many looks but were told on many occasions how much people loved this car. Those came from Porsche owners and even a guy who just purchased a new GT500 who told us he should have waited and bought one of these. I can see why this car is so popular at the track. It really is more than just a Mustang, it’s a great track car. It’s a Boss 302 through and through.

Laguna Seca:

Just a little extra about the Laguna Seca edition. We had the chance to do a Quick Drive review of this car a few months back, but we were not able to get it for a full review. As I stated above, the Laguna Seca is a special edition of the Boss 302 that Ford will only produce 750 examples of total. What makes this better than the standard Boss 302? The Laguna Seca implements the “less is more” attitude. No rear seats, just a fancy tubular-steel X-brace where the seat should be. The front end has an even more aggressive front splitter that looks like it’s taken strait off a Grand-Am car. The springs are refitted with an even higher-rate. The rear wheels are up from 9.5 to 10-inches wide in the rear. You get brake-cooling ducts, an
under-body air scoop, a rear anti-sway bar, and inside the cabin you get extra gauges for oil-pressure and water-temperature. The R-compound Pirelli’s fitted to the Laguna Seca are so slick and track ready that it’s not really advised to drive it in the wet. If you are serious about trackday driving, you can’t go wrong with this car and at a $6995 premium over the standard Boss, the Laguna Seca still comes in way under any other trackday dedicated car out there.

There is no messing around here; these are two of the best Mustangs I’ve ever driven, and I’ve driven many of them. The Mustang has been known as a good straight-line car with lots of power and easily upgradeable. It’s never been about the stock GT Mustang, but what Ford or the owner himself could do to improve the car. More and more, Ford has been moving the Mustang toward being a real sports car rather than just a straight-line drag car. We reviewed the 2010 Mustang and really felt that it was about as good as it could get. We’ll soon have our hands on the new 5.0 that is even better and more advanced than the old 4.6 GT and can’t wait!

What Ford decided to do with the Boss 302 was make a track inspired car, and the Laguna Seca an actual track ready car. The Boss 302 takes a standard 5.0 GT and upgrades the intake system and components inside the engine pushing the horsepower up to 444 and 380 ft-lbs of torque. Ford basically takes what they have learned from racing the Mustang on the track, and put it into a road going muscle car. On the Laguna Seca edition however, engineers were given free reign. Taking it even further, the LS has no rear seats, only cross-braces adding 10% rigidity. Also thrown in are standard Torsen limited-slip differential, revised suspension tuning, a racing front splitter, and racing brake ducts. The LS rides on 19×9-inch front and 19×10 inch rear, light-weight alloy wheels with R-compound high-performance tires that work great on a dry track; not so much on a wet one.

Even though the conditions were not ideal for these cars, we could still fill the power that awaited. Everything inside the car was just as we’d want it: great racing seats, great feel on the clutch and shifter, and plenty of feedback from the suspension and steering wheel. It wasn’t just us either, as the Boss 302 won 2011 High Performance Car of Texas. Ford has really stepped it up with these two cars; I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

There have been so many great Mustangs over the years, we couldn’t pick just one. So we cheated a little at our own game…

Here is a list of the Mustangs that have stood out to us.

2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0

2011 Ford Mustang 5.0

Bringing back the 5.0 was always a good idea, but bringing it back as such an advanced engine was just brilliant. The new Mustang has taken everything Ford has learned about racing Mustangs, and incorporated it to make this the best GT Mustang ever. Now, there is no doubt that the Mustang can compare to the best there is in European GT’s.

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca

The Laguna Seca Edition Mustang brings the already fantastic 5.0 Mustang and turns the volume to eleven. Made to be your track day, wet dream, this production Mustang is incredible.

2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

Bringing the Bullitt style back with the new retro body style was a no-brainer, but the fact that Ford didn’t just make this car about looks is what sets it apart. Special designed exhaust to give you that old Bullitt soundtrack, better suspension, and more power from the 4.6 liter V8 is all what made this car jump out at us.

2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra “Terminator”

2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra

Underrated from Ford, the SVT engine that powered the Terminator Mustang was one of the best engines Ford made. So good, in fact, that others like Panoz used this power plant to power their cars. The great looks, unbelievable power, and cult following is what made this Mustang stand out and still one of the hottest buys.

“Fox-Body” Mustang

Ford Mustang 5.0 "Fox-Body"

The “Fox-Body” Mustang was said to deviate from the Mustang heritage, yet it’s still one of the first picks for drag racing teams who want a light weight body to pack lots of power under the hood.

Shelby Mustang

1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

All Shelby Mustangs deserve recognition, but the original GT350 and GT500 were some of the best looking Mustangs made. Aftermarket manufacturers still try to duplicate the look and feel of theses cars made way back in the 60’s. An original Shelby Mustang can sell in auction anywhere from $200,000 to over $500,000.

There are many other Mustangs that any car enthusiast would be happy to have under their tree, but in an effort to keep this short enough to get you back to your family at a decent hour this Christmas Eve, we’ll end it here. Feel free to comment with your favorite Mustangs in the comment section below. Hope you enjoyed the countdown. Everyone be safe and have a very Merry Christmas!

You guys know we like Mustangs, right? If you like Mustangs, then you love Roush, and we do. But what does Roush do when Ford is making a stock Mustang with 412 horsepower under the hood. Not only that, but Ford is also making a factory version of the Boss Mustang. If you’re Roush you obviously make an all new Roushcharger to fit the 5.0 V8. This new Roushcharged engine pushed 525 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Like most Roush Mustangs though, the fun doesn’t stop there. We’re talking upgraded suspension, shocks, springs, stabilizer bars, brakes, wheels, and much more!

Roush plans of producing only 150 of theses 5XR Mustangs for $15,390 over the price of your base GT Mustang. Of course, there are many other upgrades you can throw on and under your Mustang from Roush and others, but Roush always seems to have the right setup.

The concept of a grand touring car escapes most Americans these days, for what reason I'm not entirely sure. We have a mass of open roads and long highways that stretch from sea to shining sea, but we also have an abundance of cheap air fair to hop you from state to state. In Europe, they have airlines as well, though, they still have the tradition of grand touring cars. To go ahead and clarify for anyone who I might have already lost, a grand tourer is a special kind of car car derived from the Italian phrase grand turismo.

the Grand Tourer - Aston Martin DB9

The concept of a grand touring car escapes most Americans these days, for what reason I’m not entirely sure. These cars are designed to make long distance trips at high speeds and high comfort. A grand touring car is not necessarily a race car, though most manufacturers race them, it is made to eat the miles in great comfort without sacrificing power. A traditional grand tourer is front engine, rear wheel drive, either a two seater or a two-plus-two configuration, and has a luxurious interior. This configuration allows for more space for passengers and luggege than a mid-engine sports car. The grand tourer will even sacrifice some performance in the name of comfort. The problem then arises of knowing what you want out of a car and knowing what you are buying. For example, if you are wanting a high performance track car for the street, a grand touring car will probably upset you. It won’t be designed for all out performance, although most are quick cars. It will be packed full of luxury and technology that will just weigh the car down, and you dont want that in your track ready car. Good examples of modern day grand touring cars would be something along the lines of the Aston Martin DB9, the Ferrari 599, the Bentley Continental GT, and the Maserati Grand Turismo. All the examples are high end European cars, and for good reason, the concept of the grand tourer is a European one. Here in the land of freedom, you would think that GT cars would thrive as the masses hit the country roads in exploration of their homeland. Take a second to think of the modern lineup of American vehicles and nothing seems to stand out in crowd that meets the prestige and conditions of the European GT car. If you think about it though, we do have our own unique group of cars that resembles the GT movement in Europe, we call them muscle cars. Although they lived without the refinement and luxury of the big European GT’s, the muscle car was built for power and cross country driving as well. The Mustang, one of the biggest icons and sells hits for cars in the world, has a GT variant that was always meant to be Americas grand touring car.

What better place to test a GT car than the long and open roads of Texas. What better car to choose from then the new 2010 Mustang GT. This car has gotten so much grief for not having a significant upgrade in power, and we cannot disagree. But I fear we are all looking at it in the wrong way. You see, to most, the Mustang has become just a sports car or a drag racing machine, even if it’s just from stop light to stop light. What we didn’t count on was Ford bringing back the GT into the Mustang GT. They spent their time and money making the interior better and more premium feeling, they made sure to pay attention to detail and getting the touch point surfaces just right. They also made the exterior more refined while keeping a muscular classic shape to the car. They took the time to work on the suspension and ride, taking from their racing program and really applying it to meet street conditions. This all results in a great ride in great comfort without a real premium price tag. The Mustang is now a quiet and comfortable ride along highways or country roads. When you put your foot into it, the Mustang will easily push you back into your seat and reach law breaking speeds with a quickness. Ford’s SYNC system brings the Mustang into the realm of high end technology, making even BMW rethink their infotainment systems. Ford has really brought the Mustang GT into the grand touring world. It’s still not as high quality or luxurious as the European models I listed above, but it is most definitely a more focused and thought out GT car for the masses.

As most already know, the 2011 Mustang GT will be coming out with the all new 5.0 liter engine pushing power up to 412 horsepower while still maintaining a 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway ratings, better than the less powerful outgoing 4.6 liter engine. Another future American GT car that we have high hopes for is the new Cadillac CTS coupe, especially in the “V” variant. This car should be a great luxurious and fast car that will be one of the first true grand touring cars to come out of America in the past few decades.

If you are looking for a great driving, high-powered, roomy, and mile eating grand touring car, take the time to check out what American car companies have to offer before spending your money on the standard variety of European grand tourers. It is always good to know what you are looking for and what the car is trying to bring to the table. This allows you to pick a car that really fits you that will make you happy far into the future.

Some wars have been waging since the dawn of society with race vs. race, religion vs. religion, king vs. king. Other battles that are more short-lived but still remembered to this day like the Battle of the Alamo or the Battle of Waterloo. We just stumbled into such a battle that’s been waging on the streets for almost 50 years now. There has always been that epic battle between the Camaro and the Mustang spanning back to the late 60's and revived today. This week at txGarage we were able to get a hold of a 2010 Camaro 2SS and a 2010 Mustang GT Premium, what else is there to do but race!2010 Camaro SS vs. 2010 Mustang GT

There has always been that epic battle between the Camaro and the Mustang spanning back to the late 60′s and revived today. This week at txGarage we were able to get a hold of a 2010 Camaro 2SS and a 2010 Mustang GT Premium, what else is there to do but race!

The Camaro:

The Camaro was brought back for the 2010 model year after being killed off in 2002. When redesigning the Camaro GM was going for the “retro” look to compete with the styling of the Mustang introduced in 2005. You just can’t beat the looks and styling of the new Camaro, it’s really one of the best looking “retro” interpretations out today. The car is low and wide, with great proportions and menacing looks. The interior is all modern with some retro looking gauges. Sliding into our test Camaro, your bathed in black and inferno orange, ambient lighting, accent stitching, and a plethora of buttons and knobs. The best part of the Camaro’s interior is the steering wheel, it is fat and has good hand placement and also has easy to uses and access controls. The biggest gripe I have with the interior is the huge plastic panel on the doors that swoop around the dash. In my opinion, for a $36,000 car they could have easily wrapped that in leather and it would have made ten-times the difference. We were also equipped with the Boston Acoustic premium nine-speaker audio system loaded with all the acronyms of the audio industry. – AM/FM, CD, AUX Input, USB port, Sirius XM Radio – The leather sport bucket seats were comfortable, 6-way power adjustable, and could heat your rear if the horsepower doesn’t already have you sweating.

The 2010 Camaro SS is armed with the LS3 6.2 liter V8 engine with SFI (Sequential Fuel Injection) and bolted to a 6-speed manual transmission. This combination gives you an instigating 426 horsepower and 420 lbs-ft of torque with a reasonable 16 MPG city and 24 MPG highway. You won’t have time to worry about your fuel economy though when you’re going from a standstill to 60 mph in only 4.6 seconds and cursing down the highway, the difference between 60 mph and 80 mph is a twitch of your big toe. To stop this 3,849 pound Camaro they equipped it with Brembo performance brakes with discs at all four wheels. The Camaro also comes with performance suspension, but to us it never really felt sporty just rough. To put the power down our test car was furnished with 20″X 8″ front wheels and 20″X 9″ rear wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires.

After digesting it all I’d have to say that the Camaro SS is far above what the Camaros of the past have been, and we are forever enamored by the looks of the exterior and interior of this 2010 Camaro. It did take me a day to get used to the Camaro’s clutch, I would like it to be heavier and release lower, and the shifter could have felt more mechanical but that’s a personal preference of mine. In the end the biggest problem with the new Camaro remains to be the Mustang.

The Mustang:

In 2010 the Mustang received two major changes that were desperately needed; most importantly of the two was the interior. The materials used and the looks of the inside of the Mustang has been a neglected afterthought for decades, so when we heard that the interior quality was going to be the main focus of the 2010 Mustang we forgave Ford for leaving the 4.6 liter engine that’s just as old. Our test car was a Grabber Blue GT Premium and the updated interior featured black leather trimmed sport seats with exposed blue stitching and a blue racing stripe down the center of the seat. The materials used in this car are on par with most Ford vehicles of today but are miles above the older Mustangs. Leather wrapped steering wheel, aluminum gear shifter, along with soft touch materials ensure that your touch points in the car are all pleasurable to the hands. This car also featured the Shaker 500 audio system and SYNC voice activated system with the usual SYNC goodies.

The second thing refreshed in the 2010 Mustang is the exterior. Although the dimensions of the car are mostly unchanged the looks are dramatically different, to Mustang enthusiast. It really looks like they stretched the skin of the Mustang over its muscle to expose the power and give it a more athletic stance. I love the rear end, which seems to be the hated segment from most Mustang enthusiast I’ve talked to, with the sequential tail lamps. I also love the new “Power Dome” hood; I think it looks much more muscular than the “fake” ram air hoods. The engine is the tired old 4.6 liter 3V OHC V8 tuned to the max with 315 horsepower and 325 lbs-ft of torque. Although it’s the same old engine, the 4.6 is a great, bullet proof engine that has served Ford well for years, and you still get good power for the 3,550 pounds the Mustang weighs in at. You also still get the five-speed -manual in our case- transmission with great mechanical shifting and an easy good feeling clutch peddle. Of course it has already been announce that the 2011 Mustangs will hallmark a new 5.0 engine with all the newest power and fuel saving technology. Look for that to push over 400 horsepower.

We can’t wait for the 2011 to be penned into our calendar to test but all in all the 2010 Mustang has impressed. It has the great looks a muscle car should have, it has the wheel smoking power a muscle car should have, and now it has a great comfortable interior the Mustang has always needed.

Back to the Battle:

Although they are both modern day muscle cars aimed at the same target audience, the Mustang vs. Camaro comes down to personality and preference. The looks of the Camaro are amazing and will turn more heads right now than most cars on the road, but the Mustang is not repulsive to the eyes by any measure. The Camaro is a fast beast that can burn rubber with the best of them, but the Mustang with 100 less horsepower has less weight and can match the Camaro in any situation. The interior of both cars are modern and comfortable. So which to choose? We liked the Mustang over the Camaro for the driving experience it offered. The shifter and clutch, steering and suspension, and engine and exhaust note won us over in the Mustang. It should still go without saying, though, that the Camaro is a great car and if we didn’t have the Mustang sitting in the driveway we would have been just as happy thrashing it around Texas.

When you think about the history of Carroll Shelby, his racing, and his cars, there is no doubt that performance Mustangs pop into mind. As a matter of fact, Shelby Mustangs have been ever improving for the past 45 years making Shelby one of the most signed names on a car in the world. Carroll graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas making him a Texas boy who's heart never went to far from home. The Terlingua Mustang was named after the town where Shelby decided to open a ranch with Dallas friend David Witt.

When you think about the history of Carroll Shelby, his racing, and his cars, there is no doubt that performance Mustangs pop into mind. As a matter of fact, Shelby Mustangs have been ever improving for the past 45 years making Shelby one of the most signed names on a car in the world. Carroll graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas making him a Texas boy who’s heart never went to far from home. The Terlingua Mustang was named after the town where Shelby decided to open a ranch with Dallas friend David Witt.

No wonder the Shelby Mustangs fit in so well here in Texas, no matter if your driving down a long highway to the middle of nowhere or a back windy country road, this car does it all. In the 2010 GT500, this was apparent to us at txGarage as we never wanted to get out of the car. And although this thirsty beast needed to stop for fuel more often than we would have liked, it just gave us another reason to burn rubber out of a parking lot.. There really isn’t a lot that I could find wrong with this GT500. Yes the fuel economy wasn’t that great; yes the interior was still a little cheap for spending $51,000 – although it has improved greatly – and yes the ride was a little harsh and the clutch was heavy; however, all this stuff would be whisked out of your head as you smash down on the throttle sending the back wheels into a panic looking for grip and finally being far down the road from where you were a few seconds ago. The GT500 isn’t, by far, the most powerful car money can buy and it doesn’t put that power down as well as other cars out there, but for the shear and raw emotion and theater of it all, you simply cannot beat this thing. Never have we been so scared – entertained – in a production car. The shear madness of it is worth every penny! The looks are just about the most menacing you can find but when you climb into the cockpit, its actually quite comfortable and nice. The SYNC system is a great addition to all Fords and we still got great use out of it in this car, although it took us 3 days to even bother with touching it. The practicality, yes practicality, of this car can’t be beat as well. If I really had to pick one car to compare it to, it would be an Aston Martin for the British. Aston Martins are not the fastest cars you can buy for the money, but the pure emotion and beauty they portray are unbeatable. I think of the GT500 as the American Aston Martin: it’s beautiful and emotional. That is what makes the car so great, and on that thought its quite a bargain too.

The 2010 GT500 was built starting with the formula from the 2008 GT500KR. In 2011, the GT500 will be getting an all aluminum block right out of the Ford GT super car. The GT500 now has a steel block. Even if the power doesn’t go up, in which case there is no need, the car will be much lighter and hopefully add to the driving experience. Other potential down sides to the current GT500 are the all new 2011 GT with the reintroduction of the 5.0. This new GT will finally feature all the latest engine technology while also increasing horsepower and fuel economy. They already have a wonderful interior, and with a little shopping trip to Ford Racing, the 2011 Mustang GT could easily be made to run with the big boys of the Mustang brand. For the name -Shelby- and the looks of the GT500 though, it’s still a hard choice to pass up.

His first “Fox Body” project car, when he was seventeen, started him on his path to being a Mustang enthusiast. Brad runs his own Garage Door Company out of Hurst Texas where he gets the pleasure of seeing some of the great cars stored behind the garage doors in Texas. He also has a mutual work relationship with the guys at Ultimate Man Caves who we respect a lot. Brad is known for being the crazy man behind the wheel, not afraid to burn some fresh rubber off his tires or smoke people out while stopped at the red light.
