txGarage 2012 Detroit Auto Show Roundup NAIAS

We didn’t make it to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week, but we can still jump on the bandwagon and tell you what we thought. There were lots of cars revealed in Detroit, and even if we could post about all of them, you would never read it all. So we are narrowing it down to what we thought were the biggest surprises, biggest successes, what we’re most looking forward to driving, and maybe throw in some fails.

Will Texas ban cell phones in cars?

Distracted Driving

Distracted Driving

Is the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) trying to diminish your liberty?

The NTSB has released a new study that claims distracted drivers cause 600,000 crashes and kill around 3,000 people a year. They are now pushing for state governments to take action. The NTSB has called for a ban on using cell phones while in the car. This includes texting, but also includes using hands-free technology for talking or texting. Robery Sumwalt, a NTSB board member has gone on the record stating, “In regarding distractions due to electronic devices, if we don’t act now how many lives will we lose in the next 30 years. I don’t think we can afford to wait an entire generation to change this.” Continue reading

Austin F1 and the U.S. Grand Prix is still alive:

Austin F1 - Circuit of the Americas

Austin F1 - Circuit of the Americas

That’s right. All the news we are getting now confirms that the track in Austin and the race will happen.

If you have been following along, construction of the 3.4-mile track was halted when the Texas comptroller’s office refused to put up the $25 million it pledged to pay for the F1 sanctioning fee. It seems now that an agreement between F1 and Texas and the date has been set for the Austin race next year.

So construction continues and we hope to he having a big F1 party next year! Keep up to date with more from Austin and the track right here.

Jesse James Wrecks Supercar in Austin

Jesse James Hennessey GT1000

Jesse James Hennessey GT1000

A few days ago we saw the headline of a Ford GT crashed into the backyard of a residence in in Austin. Jalopnik has done some digging and has all but confirmed that this Ford GT is Jesse James’ 1000 hp Hennessey GT. They have recently got a quote from the Hennessey shop saying, “We’ve built a couple of vehicles for Jesse including our GT1000 twin turbo upgrade on his Ford GT. It’s nice to know that Jesse drives his Hennessey GT hard enough to find the limit. After all, if you don’t crash or break every now and then, you’re not going fast enough.”

Yes this is one reason we love the guys at Hennessey, but more to the point, was this Jesse James’ GT, and if so was he driving. Read what Jalopnik has uncovered and judge for yourself until we get more facts.

Houston Texas Sinkhole Swallows a Kid

Houston Texas Sinkhole Swallows a Kid

The drought has taken a toll on Texas, including our transportation infrastructure. It’s believed that the dry conditions, mixed with recent rains, caused this massive sinkhole to open up a Houston street.

Standing on the corner, 16 year old Giovanni Long was sucked into this six-foot deep sinkhole. He’s stated “Everything beneath me crumbled. I was trying to dig my way out of the hole, but the ground kept breaking back into me. It’s funny now that I think about it… but when it happened, it was actually scary.”

TxDOT Prepares DFW for Winter Weather

It’s that time of the year again and the team at TxDOT is working overtime to prepare for the first threat of winter weather in DFW. Texas drivers don’t see much ice or snow on a regular basis and are never prepared for the driving conditions. The people at TxDOT try their best to help keep the roads as drivable as possible. They have issued statements saying crews in Dallas and Fort Worth are ready with salt/sand mixes to treat interchanges, overpasses and bridges. Continue reading

2011 State Fair of Texas Media Reveals

2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor at the State Fair of Texas
2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor at the State Fair of Texas

Unfortunately we were not able to make it out to the State Fair of Texas Media event this year, but we still have lots of news to share!

Ford:

[SinglePic not found] Ford brought, what else, but the biggest, baddest truck to be revealed at the Texas State Fair. First from Ford at the State Fair this year was the 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. If you remember we test-drove the 2011 Raptor a few months back and it’s one capable machine. For 2012, Ford expands on its off-roading abilities. New to the Raptor for 2012 is a Torsen front differential that is said to increase grip significantly on the front end of the truck and improve its capabilities in handling obstacles, steep grades, and altogether slippery conditions. Another great new feature is a front camera system. Ford claims this to be a “class-exclusive, patent-pending” technology, but it seems to be more like what Range Rover has been using for a few years now. Basically, it gives you better visibility when you need to carefully navigate around obstacles off-road. The new 2012 Raptor also adds a little in the styling side as well. New wheel design, upgraded interior packages with aluminum accents, and unique bodyside graphics round out the list. After driving the 2011 Raptor, it was hard to see what Ford could really do to make this more capable, but it doesn’t hurt to try. We can’t wait to get our hands on one of these and see how it measures up. Continue reading
