3 Tips to Prevent Vehicle Theft During the Holidays

The likelihood that your vehicle will be stolen or broken into increases during the holiday season. In fact, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are two of the most popular days of the year for car-jackings and car break-ins, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. This is partly because more people are out and about during the holidays and also because they have presents, luggage and other valuables in their car this time of year.

Tips for preventing vehicle theft and break-ins

How can you prevent you and your family from having your car stolen, robbed or vandalized this holiday season? We offer three, good, common sense tips that will go a long way to keeping you and your property safe this season.

  1. Always lock your car. It only takes a few seconds for thieves to steal items out of your car. Be sure to lock your vehicle even when you’re just going to run into a store for a minute. It’s also a good idea to lock your car doors when you’re inside of the car. This prevents anyone from entering your vehicle when you’re stopped at a traffic light or other road hazard. Of course, it should go without saying that good vehicle security means never leaving your keys in your vehicle when it’s unattended.
  2. Stow your packages and valuables out of sight. Many car thefts are crimes of opportunity. Someone sees your newly-purchased presents in the back seat of the care and decides instantly that they’ll help themselves to them. It’s easy to avoid such crimes; simply stow your packages and other valuables where they can’t be seen from the outside of the car, such as in the trunk.
  3. Be aware of your surroundings. When you’re out holiday shopping, especially at night, make sure that you know where you’re going and what route you’ll take before you leave the house. It’s also a good idea to pay attention to where you park and park in a well-lit area, if at all possible. You don’t want to be wandering around a dark parking lot looking for your car.

This year, enjoy the holiday season safely by keeping your vehicle and your belongings secure and remembering to pay attention to what’s going on around you.
