Track-Ready and Street-Savvy: The 2024 Subaru WRX TR Review

The 2024 Subaru WRX TR is set to make waves in the sport compact car segment with its enhanced performance capabilities and refined design. Building on Subaru’s rally heritage, the WRX TR offers enthusiasts a compelling blend of power, control, and cutting-edge technology.

The 2024 WRX TR draws inspiration from Subaru’s storied history in rally racing. This latest iteration continues the tradition, delivering robust power and precision handling. The WRX TR is equipped with a track-tuned suspension, a standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and a high-performance braking system from Brembo®. These features set it apart from competitors like the Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N, and Volkswagen GTI, which lack all-wheel drive.

The WRX lineup includes the Base, Premium, Limited, TR, and GT trims. The TR trim is particularly noteworthy, featuring all-new 19-inch alloy wheels paired with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires. These high-performance tires, combined with stiffer springs and retuned dampers, provide exceptional body control and steering response.

The exterior design of the WRX TR is aggressive and bold, characterized by Subaru’s signature hexagonal grille, compact headlights, and a broad front hood scoop. Prominent character lines run across the front, sides, and rear, emphasizing the vehicle’s sporty demeanor. The WR Blue Pearl color enhances its visual appeal, while the matching body-color foldable mirrors and roof-mounted shark fin antenna add to its sleek look. The rear design is completed with an integrated low-profile rear spoiler and taillights that glow reminiscent of volcanic magma.

At the heart of the WRX TR is a 2.4-liter Boxer DOHC intercooled turbocharged engine. This powerhouse delivers 271 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 to 5,200 rpm. Coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission, this engine provides a thrilling driving experience. The TR trim also benefits from a moonroof delete, reducing weight and lowering the center of gravity for improved handling.

Inside, the WRX TR is fitted with Recaro performance-design front seats upholstered in black and gray Ultrasuede™. The interior exudes a sporty yet refined atmosphere, enhanced by a D-shaped steering wheel. The moonroof delete further contributes to the vehicle’s low center of gravity, improving its agility.

Tech-wise, the WRX TR is equipped with the next-generation STARLINK® Multimedia system featuring an 11.6-inch touchscreen. This setup offers seamless connectivity and a user-friendly interface. Additionally, the 2024 WRX TR marks the first time Subaru’s EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology is available on all WRX models with a manual transmission, providing enhanced safety and peace of mind.

The 2024 WRX TR’s driving experience is defined by its sport-tuned suspension and active torque vectoring. The stiffer springs, revised damping rates, and retuned steering rack deliver better body control and steering response, while maintaining ride quality. Fuel economy stands at 26 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city, a reasonable trade-off for its performance capabilities.

The full MSRP for the 2024 WRX TR is $42,507, making it a competitive option in the performance sedan market.

The 2024 Subaru WRX TR is an excellent choice for enthusiasts seeking a performance-focused vehicle. With its enhanced handling, powerful engine, and advanced technology, the WRX TR stands out as a top contender in its class. It drives great, looks great, and offers a premium interior – all without breaking the bank. For those looking for a sporty ride with Subaru’s rally DNA, the WRX TR is definitely worth considering.
