HOLLYWOOD, Ark—The road to Delight, Arkansas, is as serene as its name suggests. Winding through lush, rolling hills, Highway 26 was the perfect proving ground for the 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid—a vehicle that embodies a quiet but tectonic shift in the auto industry, from the Detroit-Windsor corridor to the Seoul-Tokyo axis.

The Toyota Highlander has long been the gold standard for family SUVs, a beacon of reliability and hybrid prowess. But the Sorento isn’t trying to out-Toyota Toyota. Instead, it challenges the status quo with a secret weapon: Genesis-grade luxury at a Kia price.

Beneath its unassuming badge, the Sorento is peppered with luxury cues borrowed from its corporate cousin, Genesis. How? Kia and Genesis share engineering teams and design studios.

This trickle-down engineering brings advanced features like E-Ride adaptive damping and active pitch management for a magically smooth ride. Its library-quiet cabin isn’t an accident—it’s achieved with laminated acoustic glass, reinforced door seals, and strategic sound-deadening materials straight from the Genesis playbook.

Driving Verdict: Smooth Operator and Fuel-Sipper

According to multiple third-party raters, the 1.6L turbo-hybrid powertrain (227 hp, 258 lb-ft) isn’t new but proven reliable. Consumer Reports rates it as highly as the Highlander’s hybrid. It provides plenty of pep for merging and passing. 

The real story is the fuel economy. The EPA rates it at 35 mpg city/32 mpg highway. With a drag coefficient of 0.29 in a market segment where those run closer to 0.35, one would expect solid fuel economy.

My test proved a simple truth: your right foot is the boss. At 81 mph, I got a concerning 26.5 mpg. Slowing to 78 boosted it to 29 mpg. But on a 60-mph country road, the Sorento rewarded my patience with a stellar 40 mpg. Over 400 miles, I averaged a respectable 33.4 mpg. 

Consider it a lesson in the high cost of high speed—a tax that owners of SUVs with angry grilles shaped like barn doors pay daily.

The handling is composed, not sporty, making it a relaxed long-distance cruiser. With 8.4 inches of ground clearance, it’s confident on unpaved forest roads, though it’s no rock crawler.

The Gateway Drug to an EV

This is the Sorento Hybrid’s hidden talent. Exposing drivers to the joys of electric-assist smoothness, instant torque, and one-pedal driving demystifies electrification. Surveys show 74% of hybrid owners would consider a full EV next. 

For Sorento owners, that jumps to 85%. Others are essentially already there. A plug-in version gives owners 30 miles of all-electric operation for a $6,300 to $9,000 premium. 

Thirty miles doesn’t sound like much, but it is. Blonde Beauty averages more than 212 mpg on her Escape PHEV when she does not make a long, out-of-town trip, which is most months.

Production included, over 125,000 miles, a non-hybrid Sorento will produce 60 tons of hydrocarbons. A hybrid model will reduce that by five tons, and a plug-in by 15 tons, so there are things individuals can do about global warming.

Electrified, not all-electric, cars make the transition to EVs a small step, not a giant leap.

While the end of tax credits resulted in a short-term boost in EV sales in the past quarter, sales of hybrids are on a long-term growth arc. 

Nearly 50% of all new Toyotas are HEV or PHEV, and dealers are fighting to keep inventory on the lot. The rate of change will only accelerate. While not much more can be done to improve internal combustion engines, the electric propulsion technology is in its infancy. 

The politicians may not get it, but consumers do.

Family-Friendly Interior and Safety

The cabin is a tech-forward, comfortable space. The horizontal dash is modern, and soft-touch materials are found where you expect them. It’s offered with seating for seven or, in the SX Prestige trim, six with plush captain’s chairs. The third row is best for teens and younger kids.

We found integration with iPhones to be flawless (which rarely occurs), and on-screen and physical switchgear relatively simple to operate.

Standard safety tech is comprehensive, including forward collision-avoidance and lane-keeping assist. The Sorento has earned a 5-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.

A Wake-Up Call for Detroit

The threat to an industry critical to American global economic and military dominance is palpable and quantifiable. Globalization and Eastern competition have cost the U.S. some 2–3 million manufacturing jobs and now threaten over 10 million auto-related positions, contributing roughly $1.2 trillion to GDP annually. 

Building more gas guzzlers is a strategy that works only until one pulls one’s head out of the sand. At some point, Americans will revolt against high monthly payments, upside-down loans, and getting gouged at the gas pumps. The rest of the world is already there.

North American auto assembly slipped 3 percent in 2025. U.S. auto manufacturing employment fell by 20,800 jobs to 997,300 workers, marking another contraction in a sector that once employed well over a million and underpins nearly $1.2 trillion in annual economic output. 

With Chinese, Korean, and Japanese OEMs gaining global share at the expense of American production, it’s clear why at least one CEO is sitting up and taking notice.

After driving a Chinese EV, Ford CEO Jim Farley called Eastern advantages in innovation and production an “existential threat”. He moved to license Chinese battery tech for a new Michigan factory to build an affordable electric pickup.

The message is clear: the global race is on, and the Sorento is a compelling entry from the new front-runner.
