Disgruntled Employee Hacked Austin Car Buyers:

Omar Ramos Lopez

Omar Ramos-Lopez, 20

Austin Police arrested a 20 year old male on charges of breach of computer security. Omar Ramos-Lopez was fired from a local car dealer in Austin, Texas, yet instead of using his skills to find new work he decided to hack the employer’s computer system. The Car dealer was bombarded with calls from 80 customers that complained about their car not starting or honking without cause. The electronic GPS units installed by the company are controlled through a computer system that Omar was able to gain access to allowing him to disrupt customers lives. He was also able to gain access to the accounting software, where he changed information and names of customers in the database.

By the time the Austin High-Tech Crimes Unit was able to catch Omar, he had deactivated 100 cars of the 2,300 cars on the street by this company. Omar now faces 120 days to two years in jail if convicted of the hacking charges laid before him.

I ran into one of these life changing situations the other day, where I know, no matter what I do, I can never go back. Continue reading

Toyota FT-86 Concept

Today, in anticipation of the Tokyo Auto Show next month, Toyota has released the first images of the new FT-86 concept. This would be the Toyota/Subaru machine meant to bring a rear wheel drive setup back to Toyota and using a boxer-four power plant from Subaru in both cars, at around $20K sticker price. This has been a hot issue for a long time and has been rumored to have been killed, then back on, then killed again, but with the new pictures being released from Toyota we have no doubt that we’ll be seeing this tie-up on the streets soon. Penske Backs Out

Saturn Line Up

Saturn Line Up

Penske and GM both issued statements today about the fallout of their deal for Saturn. Penske withdrew its plans to purchase Saturn citing they had problems getting a third party to supply Saturn with cars. After the pull out GM announced that it would not be seeking other buyers for the brand and would begin preparing dealers with the new terms. We don’t yet know how long MG will continue to feed Saturn with cars, not too much longer we assume.

It is sad to see that the deal turned out this way as we were genuinely excited to see what Penske could do with its own car brand.
