2025 Acura TLX Type S Review: An Underrated Contender in the Luxury Sport Sedan Segment

It’s easy to overlook Acura when considering luxury sport sedans, especially with established names from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz grabbing much of the spotlight. However, every time I get behind the wheel of an Acura, I’m consistently reminded of just how impressive these cars really are. This week, I’ve had the pleasure of driving the 2025 Acura TLX Type S, and it’s been a surprisingly dynamic experience that showcases Acura’s dedication to performance, comfort, and unique styling. From the powerful turbocharged engine to the refined interior and solid tech features, the TLX Type S holds its own and proves it’s worthy of consideration in a crowded market.

Trim Options

The 2025 TLX lineup offers three trims: the Technology Package, A-Spec Package, and the high-performance Type S. The Technology Package provides a solid foundation with luxury essentials, while the A-Spec adds sporty styling elements and upgrades like Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) and distinctive 19-inch wheels. But the Type S is where Acura turns things up a notch. Equipped with a powerful engine, upgraded suspension, and unique exterior details, the Type S is designed for drivers who crave performance without sacrificing the luxury feel.

Exterior Design

The 2025 TLX Type S makes a bold first impression with its low, wide stance and Acura’s signature design cues. The frameless Diamond Pentagon grille immediately catches the eye, setting a modern tone that’s both aggressive and elegant. Jewel Eye® LED headlights and Chicane-style LED daytime running lights give the TLX a recognizable front end that maintains Acura’s distinct look. For the Type S, Acura introduces an Exclusive Styling Package that takes the athletic feel to a new level. This package includes an open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille mesh, quad exhaust outlets, a front splitter, rear decklid spoiler, and red Brembo® front brake calipers—all combining to create a performance-focused aesthetic. The 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 255/35 R20 all-season tires further emphasize its sporty stance, making the TLX Type S a true head-turner.

With its Apex Blue Pearl exterior, my test model looked particularly striking. Acura’s design language has evolved while staying true to its roots, and the TLX Type S perfectly balances elegance and athleticism. The TLX is generously proportioned, with a 113.0-inch wheelbase and 194.6-inch overall length, giving it a confident, planted presence on the road.

Interior and Tech Features

Step inside the TLX Type S, and the interior welcomes you with a mix of luxury and functionality. The Orchid interior pairs well with the sporty, upscale vibe Acura aims to deliver. Leather-trimmed sport seats with UltraSuede inserts provide a comfortable and supportive ride, making it clear that the Type S is designed for both long commutes and spirited drives.

On the tech front, Acura has outfitted the TLX Type S with a 12.3-inch Precision Cockpit™ Digital Instrument Cluster, a 12.3-inch HD Dual Content Display, and an Acura ELS Studio 3D Premium Audio System with 17 speakers, providing an immersive sound experience. While the visuals on both displays are crisp and accessible, the True Touchpad Interface instead of a touchscreen might not be everyone’s preference. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® integration, along with a wireless charging pad and a Surround View Monitor, add to the convenience and modernity of the interior. There’s a lot to like about the tech setup here—it’s intuitive, well-integrated, and suited to Acura’s target demographic.

Cargo Space

For a sport sedan, the TLX Type S offers decent practicality with 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space. While it won’t match the storage capacity of an SUV, this trunk space is spacious enough to accommodate daily needs, whether it’s groceries, luggage for a weekend getaway, or sports gear. Acura strikes a solid balance between sporty style and everyday utility, making it a versatile choice for drivers who appreciate both performance and practicality.

Engine and Powertrain

At the heart of the 2025 TLX Type S lies a powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, this engine offers quick, smooth shifts that keep the TLX Type S ready for action at any speed. Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system is another highlight, allowing the Type S to distribute up to 70% of its torque to the rear axle, and even direct all of that torque to one side if necessary. This results in excellent stability, especially in corners, where the TLX Type S feels balanced and controlled.

The driving dynamics are solid, with the TLX Type S staying flat through turns while maintaining a comfortable ride quality. Even without adjusting the drive mode, the power delivery is satisfying and responsive, and it’s clear that Acura has tuned this model for both spirited driving and everyday usability.

Fuel Economy

With an EPA rating of 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, the TLX Type S offers respectable fuel efficiency given its performance capabilities. While it may not lead the pack in terms of fuel economy, these numbers are in line with what you’d expect from a turbocharged V6 in a sport sedan of this caliber.

Price and Value

The 2025 TLX Type S starts at $57,750, with a fully equipped price reaching $59,545, including destination charges. I’ll admit, I was a bit surprised at the price point. Acura has packed a lot into this sedan, but with a price tag nearing $60K, it’s in direct competition with some heavy-hitting luxury rivals. That said, the TLX Type S brings a unique mix of Acura reliability, performance, and luxury features, making it an appealing choice for those who want a well-rounded, high-performance sedan without the premium badge markup.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 Acura TLX Type S is a refreshing entry in the luxury sport sedan market. With its powerful V6 engine, bold design, well-equipped interior, and engaging driving dynamics, it makes a strong case for itself in a segment dominated by established German and American competitors. Acura’s dedication to Precision Crafted Performance is evident here, and it results in a car that surprises and impresses at every turn.

For drivers looking for a sporty, luxurious, and feature-rich sedan that delivers more than just a badge, the TLX Type S is a worthy contender. It’s a car that doesn’t just check the boxes—it delivers a genuinely enjoyable driving experience that’s both practical and exhilarating. If you’re in the market for a high-performing sedan with a unique blend of style and sophistication, the 2025 TLX Type S should be on your radar.
