2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale – Now with a Pure Turbo Punch

The Alfa Romeo Tonale made its U.S. debut as a sleek plug-in hybrid compact SUV — a stylish and tech-forward entry into a competitive segment. For 2025, Alfa is giving enthusiasts another option: a gas-only 2.0-liter turbocharged variant that trades electric range for responsive performance and classic simplicity. It’s a welcome addition for those who love the Tonale’s look and feel but want a more traditional driving experience.

Italian Style That Turns Heads

From the moment it arrived, the Tonale has stood out for its distinctly Italian design. With sculpted body lines, a signature triangular grille, and sleek LED lighting front and rear, it’s unmistakably Alfa Romeo. Compact in size but bold in presence, the Tonale strikes a balance between sporty hatchback proportions and SUV versatility.

Inside, the cabin blends luxury and sportiness with a driver-focused layout. Expect soft-touch materials, contrast stitching, and available Alcantara or leather-trimmed seats. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch center touchscreen give the Tonale a modern tech feel, with built-in navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration.

Powertrains: Plug-In Hybrid or New Turbo Gas

Previously, the Tonale was only offered as a plug-in hybrid featuring:

  • 1.3L turbocharged I4 + electric motor
  • 285 combined horsepower
  • All-wheel drive (standard)
  • Approx. 30+ miles of electric-only range

New for 2025, Alfa is introducing a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas-only engine, previously unavailable in the U.S. Tonale lineup:

  • 2.0L turbocharged inline-4
  • 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque
  • 9-speed automatic transmission
  • Standard all-wheel drive

This engine is tuned for a more spirited, dynamic feel, delivering smooth power and quick acceleration — especially welcome for those who don’t want to plug in or worry about battery range. It’s the same 2.0T found in other Stellantis products, but it feels right at home in the Tonale’s agile chassis.

Trims & Pricing (Estimated)

The 2025 Tonale is expected to offer both hybrid and 2.0T options across familiar trim levels:

  • Sprint: Starting around $44,000
  • Ti: Around $46,000
  • Veloce: Around $49,000–$51,000
  • (Exact trim availability for the 2.0T may vary)

The 2.0T model will likely be priced slightly below the plug-in hybrid version, offering a more accessible entry point for drivers who want performance over electrification.

First Drive at the Texas Auto Roundup

At this year’s Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) Auto Roundup, I had the chance to drive the 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale 2.0L Turbo, making our group some of the first journalists in the U.S. to get behind the wheel. It’s everything you’d expect from Alfa — sharp handling, head-turning design, and a strong performance punch from the new turbo engine. While the hybrid version is impressive in its own right, this 2.0T setup felt more responsive and engaging on the short drive loop. If priced right, the Tonale 2.0T could easily become the volume seller for Alfa Romeo in the U.S. market.Be sure to check out my video review from the Auto Roundup for more of my first impressions behind the wheel, and stay tuned for more coverage from TXGarage as we continue to highlight some of the most exciting new vehicles of 2025.
