Keeping Sedans Relevant in Texas

Nissan has unveiled the all-new 2026 Sentra, bringing sharper styling, more tech, and familiar dependability to its long-running compact sedan. Now entering its ninth generation, the Sentra carries on a nameplate with more than 40 years of history and over 6.5 million sold.

Designers leaned into sharp character lines and a fastback-like roofline, giving the car a wider, more upscale stance without changing its footprint. Standard LED headlights and taillamps, plus new wheel designs up to 18 inches on the SR, add to the premium impression.

Inside, the Sentra debuts available dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, customizable ambient lighting, and available Bose audio. Higher trims like SL bring quilted seating and premium materials, while the sporty SR gets unique bumpers, red interior accents, and a rear spoiler.

Safety tech is also stepped up, with Nissan Safety Shield 360 standard across all trims. Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and available ProPILOT Assist highlight a list of advanced driver-assist features not always seen in this segment.

Under the hood, things are more familiar. The 2026 Sentra continues with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT. Nissan says the transmission has been retuned for smoother, more natural acceleration, and a new Sport mode on higher trims sharpens throttle response and shift patterns. EPA ratings come in at up to 33 mpg combined.

From my perspective, I’ve always appreciated the Sentra as a simple car done right, and I’m glad to see Nissan keeping it alive with modern updates. Just looking at the photos, the new design looks clean and modern—almost giving off some Hyundai Elantra vibes while still holding its own style. The interior looks solid, and while I would have liked to see a more stout engine option, this setup should be plenty for most drivers and will likely keep costs in check.

Here in Texas, where a lot of buyers default to trucks and SUVs, it’s refreshing to see a compact sedan still being given this kind of attention. For city commutes around Dallas or long highway runs between the big triangle metros, the Sentra looks like it’ll handle the job just fine. I’ll hold off final judgment until I can drive it myself, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs on Texas roads.

The 2026 Nissan Sentra will be available in S, SV, SR, and SL trims, with pricing to be announced closer to launch later this year.
