Everything You Need to Know – 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary

As an experienced car reviewer who has driven multiple 5th generation Toyota 4Runners over the years, I recently had the opportunity to test drive the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition. It’s rumored that the 6th generation platform is coming soon, so this could be the last of the 5th gen models that I get to drive.

This special edition 4Runner commemorates the 40th anniversary of the iconic SUV’s launch in 1983. The exterior features a midnight black paint job with Heritage-inspired graphics, a unique front grille with the Heritage Toyota nameplate spelled out, and 17-inch bronze-colored alloy wheels. The interior has black SofTex-trimmed seats with bronze-colored accent stitching and a 40th Anniversary Special Edition logo embossed on the headrests.

Under the hood, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, which is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The SUV is equipped with part-time 4WD, hill start and downhill assist control, and has an average fuel economy of 16/19/17 MPG.

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition has a starting price of $47,120 and is available in various trims, including SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. Compared to other SUVs, the 4Runner competes with the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, the new Ford Bronco, and the Land Rover Defender.

During my test drive, I found the 4Runner to be a capable and reliable SUV that’s still popular despite being on the market for nearly a decade. The cargo volume is 47.2 cubic feet and increases to 89.7 cubic feet with the second row folded. The 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and 8-speaker sound system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Overall, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Edition is a unique and attractive option for those looking for a reliable and off-road capable SUV. The limited run of 4,040 units means it may be harder to find, so interested buyers should act quickly.
