People of Travis County, Texas, it’s time to let out that breath you began holding so long ago, you’ve probably forgotten about it. Austin, Texas has come together with the Formula One Group and announced that a stop in Austin would you be added to the Formula One circuit for the next decade!
Land has been set aside to the tune of 900 acres (which was previously meant for a new housing development) in Southeastern Travis County. City officials have begun working on getting all permits needed in order for construction to begin in December. The track plans to hold it’s first race in the 2012 season.
The project is being backed by Red McCombs, former owner of the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Vikings, founder of the McCombs Automotive Group. McCombs has coined the phrase “Speed City” for the new project located next to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Not only is this bringing F1 to Texas but also bringing it back to the US where the F1 fans of America can unite. If the old saying “everything is bigger and better in Texas” holds true, hopefully they’ve found a home they can stay in for quite awhile. For now, we’ll enjoy what we got. See you in Austin!

I can’t wait! I’m not a big F1 fan but whatever brings more racing and racing fans (that isn’t NASCAR) to Texas… I’m down!!!
Actually Elroy is the new Speed City! Don’t be surprised if Nascar stops in once and a while.
